International astronomy conference opens in Vietnam

The international scientific conference ‘The Cosmic Cycle of Dust and Gas in the Galaxy: from Old to Young Stars’ is taking place from July 9-13, 2018 in the International Center of Interdisciplinary Science Education (ICISE) located in Quy Nhon City of the central province of Binh Dinh.

The conference is co-organized by the Rencontres du Vietnam, Bordeaux University of France, and the Vietnam National Space Center.

Taking part in the conference are 70 scientists from 20 nations around the world, including 8 from Vietnam, as well as many young astronomy enthusiasts.

In the conference, the Vietnamese scientists will present their scientific researches. Many special sessions will be dedicated to discussions on the origin and evolution of matter in the Solar System such as meteorites, comets.

According to Dr. Pham Tuan Anh of the Department of Astrophysics and Space (under the Vietnam National Space Center – a member of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), in 2016, there was one specific conference on the aspect of kinematics, winds, and stars in the space. In the following year, scientists paid more attention to the formation of stars. In the conference this year, the focus is on the evolution of dust and gas in the stars’ environment, meaning the Galaxy.

“This is the conference on the cycle of matter in our Galaxy. At first, there were only a few elements like Hydrogen or Helium. However, on the earth now there are various elements such as Iron, Copper, or Gold, which raises a typical question of their origin. The answer lies in the stars, where all elements are kept. It might be that in stars’ evolution, those elements are released just like in an explosion”, said Dr. Anh.

Recently, thanks to prominent technological advances of developed countries such as Alma Telescope in the Republic of Chile, astronomers are able to discover very complicated molecules in our Galaxy and differentiate different areas in the sky. This greatly aids the task of studying new molecules and atoms, along with their evolution, which is one of the topics of this conference.

The conference is expected to be the forum for interested people to access the best data sources of the contemporary science and to exchange their research results with international leaders of the field.
