$77.4 million to be allocated for remedying coastal erosion in central Vietnam

With the threat of coastal erosion, Vietnamese Prime Minister has approved VND1,800 billion ($77.4 million) from the state budget to provide central provinces from Nghe An to Binh Thuan.

The sum will be used for improving coastal districts, which face grave danger of shoreline erosion and land loss posing peril to inhabitants and key infrastructure, as well as for dredging river gates.
Moreover, PM Phuc approved to supplement additional amount of VND1 trillion from the country’s reserves to support above-mentioned central provinces to revamp infrastructure.
The ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, Natural Resources and Environment, Construction, Science and Technology and related agencies in localities were assigned to carry out assessment and take measures against shoreline and mountainous erosion and sediment in river gates.
As per weather meteorologists, the knock-on effects of El Nino phenomenon can have impacts even more widely; severe drought at any time could have “tragic” consequences on the central region.
Accordingly, the PM requested the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and competent agencies to take heed to dams and irrigation reservoirs.
