155 people die during five Tet days because of traffic accidents

Just in five Tet days ( the Lunar New Year), traffic accidents killed 155 people and injuring 149 others, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.

The committee said traffic accidents rose during four days from February 15 to 18 killing 30 people each day averagely, mostly amongst motorcyclists in rural districts. Only yesterday 47 traffic accidents occured, killing 34 people and injuring 29 others.
Traffic police officers handled thousands of violations relating to those who did not wear helmet on motorbikes or carried many people.
On two days, February 17 and 18, traffic gridlocks have seen in streets to pagodas in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Along with this, more vehicles encroached the streets in crowded parking lots; for instance, in the National Highway No.1, My Quy , Ruou, Co Co bridges.
The traffic congestion took place in the National Highway No.60, the section leading to Rach Mieu bridge in the Mekong delta province of Tien Giang’s My Tho District.
Wardens in two provinces Tien Giang and Ben Tre and employees of Rach Mieu tollbooth worked relentlessly to control traffic; if traffic congestion is worse, temporary shutdown will be done.
Because traffic accidents rose, the committee yesterday sent its urgent dispatch to control it. In the dispatch, Standing Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh requested ministries, agencies and local traffic safety committees to enhance control on the matter as per the Prime Minister’s dispatch No.1882/CD-TTg on social order and traffic safety in Tet festival and festive season.
The Deputy PM also ordered transport officials and police to increase supervision transportation in roads, railway, river and aviation. They were also asked to provide shifts around the clock for timely deal with complaints of violations and traffic jams in these days.
