Korean President Moon Jae-in pays state visit to Myanmar

Myanmar and the Republic of Korea (RoK) on September 3 signed five agreements in Myanmar's capital of Nay Pyi Taw during Korean President Moon Jae-in’s state visit to the Southeast Asian country.

The agreements include a deal on loan framework for cooperation in economic development from 2018-2022 and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the establishment of an information centre in Yangon to facilitate the RoK’s investment in Myanmar. 

The two sides also signed three other MoUs on cooperation in shipping line, upgrading shipyards, transport and construction and management in the docks; science and technology; and emerging businesses and innovation sector.

Before the signing ceremony, Myanmar President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi had separate meetings with the Korean President. 

Their discussions focused on measures to promote friendly ties and cooperation in investment, economy, agriculture, construction, transportation, cultural exchange, human resources development, establishment of RoK-Myanmar industrial complex, industrial sector development and development of tourism industry.

They also exchanged views on peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, business opportunities between the two countries in line with the RoK’s “New Southern Policy”, creating more employment opportunities for Myanmar guest workers in the East Asian country, and protection of their labour rights and peacemaking efforts in Myanmar.

On September 2, Korean President Moon Jae-in arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, and held talks with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on enhancing the bilateral cooperation to foster new growth momentum. He is the first leader of the RoK to visit the Thailand and Myanmar in seven years.

After Myanmar, Moon is set to pay a state visit to Laos, making him the first Korean leader to do so. He will meet with Lao Party General Secretary and President Bounnhang Vorachith and Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.
