HCMC wraps up US visit in California University

The high level delegation from HCMC led by Secretary of the city Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan yesterday worked with leaders of California University, Los Angeles (UCLA), making it the final working session of the delegation’s eight day visit to the US.

The meeting reviewed the cooperation between UCLA and HCMC National University for the last past and mulled ways to speed up cooperation in the upcoming time.
Right after the meeting, Mr. Nhan and standing deputy chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Le Thanh Liem witnessed a cooperation signing ceremony between the two universities.
According the signed cooperation, the two sides will visit each other and exchange lectures, scholars and management cadres in education, research and transfer fields; work together in postgraduate training; organize conferences, workshops and exchange information and academic materials; act jointly to train experts in biomedical science field, cancer treatment study and application, stem cell study and clinical application.
Delivering a speech at the final working session, Secretary Nguyen Thien Nhan said that during eight consecutive days, the HCMC high level delegation had visited and worked with three large cities in the US namely San Francisco, Boston and Washington D.C.
The working visit aims to create new conditions to boost cooperation between HCMC and US localities towards the city’s targets. Firstly, the city wants to learn about methods to assist innovative startups in HCMC including connectivity activities with the US especially Silicon Valley and Boston.
Secondly, the city seeks discussion about implementation of Smart City project publicly announced in November, including establishment of a center simulating socio-economic strategy forecasts. This is a new field in Vietnam so the city does need to find qualified partners in the US.
Thirdly, the city wants to meet the community of Vietnamese in the US especially those in innovative startup and business operations and young people who are working in large American companies.
Fourthly, HCMC aims at again seeing Vietnamese traditional friends such as the World Bank (WB) and International Finance Corporation (IFC) to define collaboration plans.
Fifthly, the city wants to meet leaders of US Government agencies such as US Department of State, National Security Council and Senior Advisor to the President as part of the city’s responsibility to contribute in further developing the Vietnam-US relationship and making the region more stable.
With the above targets, the working visit is said to be successful. For instance, HCMC has found out partners and determined specific cooperation forms, signed principle agreements with IFC and WB and others.
On the occasion of the working visit, Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan sent best wishes to the Vietnamese community in the US ahead of New Year 2018.
The high level delegation left the US to return Vietnam on the following day.
