HCMC needs $4.12 billion to ease traffic congestion

Ho Chi Minh City needs a total of VND96,159 billion (US$4.12 billion) for traffic jam and accident reduction program in the phase of 2018-2020, announced city People’s Committee Office yesterday.

Of these, city budget will finance VND33.8 trillion to implement 82 projects, Official Development Assistance (ODA) funds will provide VND24.85 trillion for two projects, central budget will fund three projects with the total cost of VND17.74 trillion and VND8.26 trillion will be mobilized under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model for ten projects.
The city will build and open to traffic 33.5 kilometers of roads and 14 bridges this year, 75 kilometers of roads and 17 bridges in the following year and 81 kilometers of roads and 18 bridges in 2020.
Land for traffic will account for 8.97 percent of urban construction land in 2018, 10.01 percent and 12.2 percent in the next two years. Public transport system will meet 9.6 percent of demand, 11.2 percent and 15 percent respectively. The program also aims at reducing fatality owning to traffic accidents year by year.
Budget fund will focus on buying environmental friendly buses using compress natural gas (CNG).
Bus network will be broadened to connect with new urban areas, industrial parks, satellite urban areas; link Tan Son Nhat Inetrnatioanl Airport up to neighboring provinces.
Moreover, the city will implement subsidized school buses in districts, build new bus stops to facilitate passengers’ travel, develop bus stations near intersections will Ring Road No.2 to limit vehicle travel to city center, and construct parking lots for motorists to use public transport means.
