Successful kidney transplant performed on a low birth weight child

Physicians of the Hanoi-based National Children Hospital yesterday announced that they have carried out two successful kidney transplants including one six-year-old child who with low birth weight.

Low birth weight increases risk for end-stage renal disease. The child with low birth weight therefore suffer kidney failure since 10 month old. Moreover, he had only one kidney in the right.
He weighed just 13.5 kilogram at the age of six.
Worse, his only kidney has not worked well from August. He had to undergo a kidney transplant.
Test results have shown that his mother’s kidney is the most suitable for the transplant.
Four days after the transplant, the child recovered and the transplanted kidney worked well.
