A 31-year-old pregnant woman at 38 weeks of gestation, presented with acute onset of fever, who was diagnosed with dengue illness was rushed to the hospital when she had low platelets count under 13,000/mm3. Worse, she was going to give birth.
Due to low platelets count, she needed transfusion; therefore, doctors decided to transfuse 14 units of red blood cell on her. The woman gave birth to a 3.5 kilogram son normally later.
Fearing that she will be at high risk of hemorrhaged after the birth, doctors kept her under close watch to make sure she would be safe.
Dengue is especially dangerous for pregnant women because they can transmit the virus to their baby during pregnancy or during birth. This may result in stillbirth, low birth weight, or premature birth. Pregnant should drink a lot of water and come to nearby medical clinics for treatment.
