Organs can be obtained from people who have died or from those who are clinically brain dead.
However, most of the transplants countrywide have been performed thanks to organ donation of living people, whilst just 220 people have undergone transplantation thanks to brain-dead donors.
Chairman of Vietnam Society of Organ Transplantation Professor Pham Gia Khanh announced the number of transplants in Vietnam has increased sharply by 100 cases each year in the last four years.
Vietnam statistically has a total number of transplants of over 4, 200, including 4,000 kidney-related and 600 marrow-related surgeries and the remaining operations are liver, heart, lung and other organ transplants so far.
This year alone, 521 organ transplants have been performed.
According to the Vietnam National Coordinating Center for Human Organ Transplantation, more than 30, 000 people registered to donate their organs after death, an increase of 10, 000 compared to the same period last year.
