Kien Giang Province takes heed to dengue prevention

The Mekong delta province of Kien Giang has recorded 761 cases of dengue infections since the beginning of the year, said the provincial Center for Preventive Medicine.

The figure this year is 34 percent higher than the average number of cases for the same period.
Of the amount, 44 are serious cases yet the province reported no death.
15 districts in the province reported dengue infections. The most affected area with the highest number of reported cases is Rach Gia Town with 174 dengue fever cases followed by Phu Quoc Island district with 104 cases and Kien Luong with 85 cases.
Medical experts said that rise in dengue cases is because of unpredictable weather and unseasonal rain. Additionally, locals are used to containing rainwater for daily activities resulting in strong development of mosquito. The disease is predicted to develop more in the next time. The health sector will increase information for the disease as well as implement proactive measures.
Health authorities in 12 communes have sprayed chemicals to kill mosquito and given out leaflets of dengue prevention. Besides, medical clinics disinfected the areas where the outbreaks of the dengue had been reported as well as local health authorities prepared equipment and personnel to ready for cope with the epidemic.
With 20 cases of dengue infections, remote district Vinh Thuan administration fretted about the dengue development especially in schools.
Deputy head of the Center for Preventive Medicine’s Contagious Disease Department Dr. Vo Thi Thuy Tram said that the practical measure is to kill larva rather than mosquito.
The province’s General hospital said that since the beginning of the year, it had admitted 361 kids including 28 serious cases suffering shock and 61 cases with pre-shocks. This year kids from 8 to 10 years old have the disease.
