The majority of groundwater in World Heritage- recognized Hoi An Town goes to luxury villas and hotel, resorts, leaving residents without freshwater and they have to buy water for their everyday water needs.

Deputy Chairman of the town Nguyen The Hung today said that the town is facing water crisis causing chaos in residents’ lives.
More than 500 households in Thanh Tam and Van Lang villages in Cam Thanh Commune ran short of water for daily activities for one month.
Locals ought to wake up at 1 AM to pump water for daily activities whereas others have to buy or begged water from relatives in different areas.
Cam Thanh village Party Secretary Nguyen Thi Van said that she did tell the water company about the problem as residents and tourism locations are suffering hardship of water but the company replied that people should wait.
In addition to Cam Thanh, other communes such as Cam Chau, Son Phong, Cam Pho, Cam Kim all faced water crisis and salinization.
Director of the city’s water company Nguyen Viet Thanh admitted that at present, tap water supply has been just weak just approximately 15,000 cubic meter a day.
However, the main culprit of water shortage in Cam Thanh Commune was the boom of hotels and restaurants.
Moreover, residents directly pumped water from the main water pipe.
In order to temporarily solve the problem, the company will seek the help of Trang Nhat water company in the central province of Quang Nam’s Dien Ban district, director Thanh said.
However, for the long-term solution, the company will upgrade the water pipe which is scheduled in July.
