Tropical depression might intensify into storm

The low pressure zone operating in the East Sea this morning upgraded into a tropical low pressure system which might continue intensifying into a storm in the next two days, reported the National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center.

The system has combined with a low pressure trough to worsen the weather in the middle East Sea, comprising Hoang Sa and Truong Sa (Paracel and Spratly) archipelagoes.

It was located southeast of the Hoang Sa Archipelago at 8 .a.m. Wind gales were measured at level 6 moving 40-50 kilometers a hour.

The system is forecast to move west northwest at 5-10 kilometers an hour and gain strength into a storm by Monday or Tuesday to impact the mid central region and the northern Central Highlands.

Meantime, a cold front has affected most provinces in the northern region, the north central region and parts of the mid central region since this morning.

The northern region has experienced heavy rains since Saturday, putting mountainous provinces in danger of landslide and flash floods, according to the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

The rain spell is predicted to linger in the northern and central region in the next 3-5 days because it has been fueled by the tropical low pressure system.

This morning, north central provinces from Nghe An to Thua Thien Hue saw medium to heavy rains, swelling rivers such as La and Gianh.

Floodwaters will begin to surge in other rivers from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai provinces from tomorrow morning.
