Three dead, one missing when Typhoon Kujira lands on Vietnam

One person died in Hai Phong City and another was wounded in Nghe An Province in the wake of the powerful storm.

Heavy rain from Typhoon Kujira caused water levels in rivers in mountainous Son La Province to raise yesterday. Many houses and crop fields were damaged or swept away by flash floods, which also caused extensive damage to provincial infrastructure projects.

Hanoi and the northern province of Thai Binh had heavy rains; accordingly, its tide turns parts many roads in Thai Binh Province into river. Residents had to place sand bags to prevent waters from flooding their houses.

Typhoon Kujira weakened to a tropical depression after entering the territory of Quang Ninh Province and Hai Phong late Wednesday afternoon with strongest winds reaching around 90kph.

Ten crew members on board four barges that lost anchor during the storm were rescued by Van Don District border-patrol force in coastal Quang Ninh Province. They were taken to the Ngoc Vung Border Post to receive medical care while soldiers tried to retrieve the barges.

The provincial authorities banned all vessels from going out to sea and asked residents to move aquaculture cages. Marine authority in Quang Ninh Province said that 487 tourist boats are anchoring in shelters in Ha Long Bay. When the weather is favorite, marine authorities will allow them to serve holidaymakers.


Northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Bac Giang, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, and Ha Giang are likely to have flash flood and landslide, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned.

Vietnam Airlines said that almost flights had their schedule changed or were canceled because of the storm affecting around 900 passengers who booked the flights from the northern province of Hai Phong to Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong-Da Nang. 9 other flights of the airline's schedule must be delayed for 5 hours due to bad weather on June 24.

Vietjet Air also cancelled 2 flights and changed routes of 4 flights. The airline proposed supporting passengers who are affected by the changed routes and delay.
