The heavy rainfall began on night of May 29 and lasted until the next morning, drenching Hai Phong City and causing a power blackout across many parts.

Hai Phong citizens said that they had never before seen such torrential rain that flooded several streets in the central area like To Hieu, Le Loi and Cau Dat. Some places were submerged under one meter of water and vehicles could not pass through.

Heavy rain lasted until the afternoon of May 30 in the northeastern province of Bac Kan, where high precipitation reached 285mm in Phu Thong District. Many streets and rice fields were waterlogged in Bac Kan Town.

The National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center said that the northern region will continue to see more heavy rain on May 31, which might trigger flash floods and landslides in the mountainous areas.

Rainwater is expected to raise waters of the Red and Thai Binh Rivers.
