Depression Forms, Threatens Rough Seas off Viet Nam

A low pressure system hovering over Bien Dong (East Sea) has intensified into a tropical depression, bringing rough seas to the area and posing risks to fishermen, said the National Hydro-meteorology Forecast Center.

At 4pm yesterday, the depression was located at 12.7 – 13.7 degrees north and 117-118 degrees east, and packed winds registered six on the Beaufort scale swirling around its center.

During the next 24 hours, the depression is forecast to keep moving west at 15kph, the center added.

As a result, rough seas and strong winds are expected in northern and central East Sea and off south central and southern provinces.

The National Steering Committee for Storm and Flood Control has ordered relevant authorities from the central Da Nang city to southernmost Ca Mau province to promptly warn fishing vessels out at sea to find safety harbors.

According to Ms Le Thi Xuan, Deputy Head of the Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Center’s Forecasting Department, localities in the south, including Ho Chi Minh City is to experience some light, off-season rains over the next few days.
