The National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center has issued warning of strong winds and hailstorms in the mountainous regions in the North from evening of December 14 due to effects of the current intense cold snap combined with westerly winds.
By evening of December 13, the cold spell almost covered all the northern provinces, causing temperatures to drop by 3-5 degrees celsius to touch 14-17 degrees celsius in low lying areas, and to 10-12 degrees celsius in mountainous areas. The cold spell also brought rain, making the cold more severe.
From evening of December 14, northern and central coastal provinces will be affected by the cold snap, with northern provinces facing heavy rains and thunderstorms in some places and low temperatures, while mountainous provinces should be cautious of whirlwinds, rain and hailstorms.
Northeasterly winds will strengthen to level 2-3 in the mainland, and to level 3-4 in coastal areas. The Gulf of Tonkin, and northern waters of the East Sea, including Hoang Sa Islands, will experience strong winds of level 6-8 and see rough sea from evening of December 14.
