Central region urgently coping with downpour and flooding

Torrential rain and water release from the Hinh River and Ba Ha River Hydroelectric Power Plant caused serious floodings as well as isolated some localities in Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Quang Ngai in recent two days.

In Binh Dinh province, around 2,750 houses near lowlands were flooded under water. 

In order to ensure safety for people, 6,530 pupils in communes of Phuoc Hoa and Phuoc Quang were allowed absence from schools since December 2. 

The Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Research and Rescue of Binh Dinh province yesterday reported that floodwater was alerted at level 2-3, even over level 3 in Kon and Lai Giang River. 

The flood level is warned to rise rapidly within next 6- 12 hours. 

Director of Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Binh Dinh province Mr. Phan Trong Ho said that a landslide occurred in a part of La Tinh River, Cat Lam commune, Phu Cat district.

The Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Binh Dinh province and military forces are making their efforts to quickly repair unsafe reservoirs. 

According to Deputy Chairman of the People’s Committee of Phu Yen province Tran Huu The, the locality yesterday decided to discharge water at the hydroelectric power plants to prevent from the flooding and isolation in the lowlands. 

Earlier, the Hinh River Hydroelectric Power Plant released water at 3,054 cubic meters.

Amid the bad weather, the Standing Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Research and Rescue asked the relevant agencies in Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa and Gia Lai to closely eye and take households in the flood – hit- areas and near the dangerous region to safe places; timely provide information relating to water discharge to residents as well as local authority; and carry out necessary measures to protect dyke systems along sea and rivers…
