Vietnam, EU talk on agreement against illegal logging

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam Nguyen Xuan Cuong and Vice President of the European Parliament (EP) Heidi Hautala yesterday had a talk about approval and implementation of the Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT-VPA) between Vietnam and the European Union (EU).

Accordingly, Vietnam is the second countries to sign FLEGT-VPA with the EU after Indonesia. 

Both sides affirmed that FLEGT-VPA would solve and prevent the problems of illegal logging as well as promoting trade in legal timber products from Vietnam to the European market and other countries.

Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam hoped the EP would soon approve the agreement.

According to Ms. Heidi Hautala, Vietnam and the EU were unanimously in timber legality assurance as well as legal exploitation origin from Vietnam to the EU market through import control.
