Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen attended a ceremony on June 24 to inaugurate the border marker number 314 at both the two countries’ land border area.
The 314 border marker lies between My Duc Commune in Ha Tien Town in the southern province of Kien Giang in Vietnam and Russey Srok Khang Lech Commune in Kampong Trach District in the province of Kampot in Cambodia.
Vietnam’s Vice Foreign Minister Ho Xuan Son, chairman of the land border demarcation and marker between Vietnam and Cambodia, said that so far the two countries had installed 287 border markers completing 76 percent of the total work. In addition to this, the two sides have demarcated about 653km of boundary, completing 51 percent of the total work.
This shows the resolve and effort by both governments in implementing treaties, agreements and deals on border and territorial work, remarked Mr. Son.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Prime Minister Dung stressed the special significance of the inauguration of marker 314 on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Cambodia. He added that the event marks the combined success of the two nations in building a borderline of peace, friendship and cooperation.
The building of border markers has satisfied the fundamental interest and desire of both people as well as set a new momentum for the two countries to implement all work on land border demarcation and marker planting, he stated.
Prime Minister Dung said the inauguration of marker 314 is an event of significance. He added that it satisfies both nations’ desire to build a borderline of peace, stability, cooperation and development as well as contribute to promoting cooperation among countries in the Mekong sub-region and in Southeast Asia.
After the inaugural ceremony, the two Prime Ministers also attended the third conference on investment cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia in Ha Tien City in Kien Giang Province.
At the meeting, PM Dung stated that he hoped the conference would facilitate exchange and economic cooperation as well as create stability for people in Kien Giang and Kampot Provinces.
He also expressed his desire that Cambodia create more favorable conditions for Vietnamese investors to do business and promote exchange in trade, friendship and comprehensive cooperation, especially in economics, trade, investment and tourism between the two countries’ border provinces.
He described recent achievements in border demarcation and marker planting as a new chapter in the history of the two countries’ relations.
The event also drew the participation of Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh and Cambodian Deputy Prime Ministers Men Sam On and Sar Kheng along with senior officials of ministries, agencies and localities of both countries.
On June 24, a solemn ceremony was held in Hanoi to mark the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cambodia.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized on the date June 24, 1967 as having gone down in history as a revolutionary struggle of the people of two resilient countries, nurtured by President Ho Chi Minh and King Norodom Sihanuok.
In the past 45 years, Vietnam and Cambodia have witnessed a closer friendship and comprehensive cooperation.
Vice PM Phuc stressed that history recorded that in late 1970s, when Cambodia fell into the hands of cruel genocidal Pol Pot groups, the army and the people of Vietnam supported Cambodia to overthrow the regime on January 7, 1979.
The Vietnamese and Cambodian people supported, shared and helped each other in the righteous struggle to win independence and to rebuild the countries.
The people of both the countries are glad to see great achievements in cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia in all fields, said Vice PM Phuc.
