A project to provide fresh water for inhabitants in the Mekong delta - the first of its kinds – will be built in a bid to ensure water security for the period 2025-2030.

The new was released after a meeting between the Ministry of Construction and the World Bank in Hanoi on June 20.

The Ministry said that the water source in 10 of the country’s 13 Mekong delta provinces is affected by salinity and alum intrusion which is far higher than estimation. Currently, 230,000 households in the area have been deprived of access to safe drinking water.

Many school, medical facilities, production units are in need of urgent fresh water. Accordingly, the project is one of resolutions in order to guarantee water and social security.

Yet the project is predicted to face shortage of capital, management capability while the state budget is limited and the government is immature when it comes to management experience.

As a result, the Ministry and the WB called for the support and management experience from local and international partners.

The WB pledged to financially support the project.
