"The country’s present achievements are thanks to the dedicated service of the whole nation, both the Party and the army. But special thanks is due particularly to our wounded soldiers who have shed their blood for the great nation, and whom our history is indebted to and shall never forget," President Nguyen Minh Triet said at the meeting.

The President expressed his best wishes for the former soldiers, and said that they will always be shining examples for the young Vietnamese generations to follow.

"The Party and State are determined to fight against corruption and social evils in order to develop the country promptly, strongly and in accordance with President Ho’s wishes and the desires of Vietnamese martyrs and wounded veterans," President Triet affirmed.

In the meeting’s warm and friendly atmosphere, signers from the Sao Mai Diem Hen (Morning Star Rendezvous) music contest, organized by Viet Nam Television, joined with the center’s wounded soldiers, and sung "Hat Mai Khuc Quan Hanh", a song dedicated to Viet Nam’s wounded soldiers by renowned musician Diep Minh Tuyen.

A day before the event, the President visited and presented gifts to three seriously wounded soldiers at the centre.

Established in 1972, the Liem Can Healthcare Centre for Seriously Wounded Soldiers has taken care of 2,970 wounded soldiers, including 604 critical cases. In 2005, the State declared the center a "Labor Hero of the Renovation Period".

For the special day, Viet Nam Television (VTV) aired "Thoi Hoa Do" or "Time of Red Flowers" (a metaphor for wartime), a show detailing war stories as told by the veterans themselves amidst memorials constructed at the Ben Duoc Temple in Ho Chi Minh City’s Cu Chi District. Many of the woeful and majestic tales chromos battles fought in the Ho Chi Minh’s area.

That morning, the northern Central Highlands province of Gia Lai held a burial ceremony for 29 remains of martyrs at the provincial cemetery.

On the same day, the High Command of Military Zone 9 cooperated with authorities of two Mekong Delta provinces, Dong Thap and An Giang, to hold burial ceremonies for 109 remains of anonymous martyrs and 181 martyrs from voluntary regiments.

Hau Giang provincial authorities sent a delegation to visit veterans, wounded soldiers and martyrs’ families living in seven districts of the province in order to distribute 700 gifts, worth VND70 million.

As well, in a program launched by Ho Chi Minh City War Veteran Association and the city’s Red Cross, a delegation of 50 doctors, pharmacists and technicians provided free examinations and medical treatments to 500 underprivileged people in Long An province’s Moc Hoa district.
