Viet Nam witnessed a 13-fold increase in the number of child abuse and violence case at schools during the 2005-2007 period.
A report by Dang Hoa Nam, deputy head of the Child Protection and Care Department under the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (Molisa), also indicated that child abuse and violence tripled in families and increased seven fold in the community during the period.
The problem was seem in all regions across the country, with Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and the provinces of Dong Nai, Dak Lak, Tay Ninh, Kien Giang and Bac Giang seeing the highest number of child abuse cases, according to the report.
The report was released at a meeting on child abuse prevention and control which took place in Hanoi on August 22.
The meeting, held by Molisa, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Plan International in Vietnam, was aimed at assessing the state of child abuse in Vietnam and discussing measures to raise the community’s responsibility in curbing the problem.
