On the March 24, 63 cities and provinces across the country turned off lights and appliances to save energy in one hour in response to the Earth Hour campaign.
The program was kicked off in Hanoi on March 3 while a series of activities were organized to respond the Earth Hour campaign 2018 localities nationwide, such as Da Nang, Can Tho and others during March.
Ambassadors of this year's earth hour campaign including Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 H’Hen Nie, singers Soobin Hoang Son and Bao Tram, actor Viet Anh, MCs Thuy Van and Danh Tung took part in exchanges to encourage thousands of young people to protect the environment, save energy and cope with global climate change.
The Earth Hour 2018 aimed also to mark ten years since the lights-out event first started in Vietnam in 2009. A ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the Earth Hour program in Vietnam was held at the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Culture House on the evening of March 24, attracting over 5,000 youth and people in the city. Another event took place at the Cach Mang Thang Tam (the August Revolution) in Hanoi on the same time.
Launched by WWF, the event has since become the world’s biggest grassroots environmental movement where landmarks and communities switch off their lights simultaneously (8.30pm local time). Many cities all over the world have planned to turn off their lights in response to the program.
