United Nations to provide over $4 mln to Vietnam’s Damrey victims

The United Nations (UN) has just approved US$ 4.21 million aid package from Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support 150,000 Vietnamese people, including 46,973 children affected by typhoon Damrey.

On November 4, Damrey made landfall in the central and southern part of the central region of Vietnam, caused serious damages about property and people’s lives in the typhoon- hit- localities. 

Around 4.33 million people have been affected, including 400,000 victims needed to receive support. 

Amid to the situation, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) provided US$ 100,000 monetary support on November 15 in order to help the country’s Damrey victims. 

The CERF’s assistance will allow the United Nations agencies strengthening support activities relating to ensure clean water, environmental sanitation and food security as well as helping the local people to quickly repair more than 300,000 destroyed houses after the natural disaster. 

With the aid, four agencies of the United Nations included Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to help the country in its relief efforts.

The United Nations in Vietnam said that that the country needed to be at US$ 60.48 million to overcome consequences of the natural disaster in December.
