The number of internet subscribers in Vietnam was over 3.1 million in 2010 and about 12.5 million people access the internet regularly, reported the Ministry of Information and Communications on October 11.

According to a survey, there are more than 8.3 million households owning a fixed landline phone and more than 30.2 percent use mobile phones.

In addition, 18 million households own a television set, which amounts to 90 percent of the total households in the country.

Tran Duc Lai, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, said that the survey showed the rising growth of telecom services during the past five years.

Lai said that the telecom sector was growing at a fast pace, however the pace of development of telecom services was unequal between rural and urban areas.

There was a wide gap in economic conditions and living standards between rural and urban people. The ministry hopes to find suitable measures to bridge this gap during the period 2011-2015, said Lai.
