The project to develop milk cow for the period of 2013-2020 is hoped to create jobs to 6,000 unemployed rural local residents. The project’s total investment is VND266 billion ($11,704,334).
For years, farmers in Soc Trang province used to breeding milk cow; subsequently, dairy cattle herds have been raised from 2004 from the success of Evergrowth Cooperative’s breeding model through the project “To improve people’s living condition in countryside”.
At present, the herds developed both on quantity and quality and Soc Trang becomes one of provinces with the largest dairy farms in the Mekong delta region milking over 11,120 dairy cows with productivity of 15,460 tons a year.
The province strives to have 17,000 dairy cows by 2020 with productivity of 23,000 tons annually. In addition to encouraging people to breed dairy cow at their houses, local government takes heed to develop cooperatives to raise the cattle in large scale. Vinamilk, Vietnam's largest dairy producer, and Agri Cooperative Evergrowth plans to buy all dairy products.
For sustainable cooperation and alliance to pave the way for more development of dairy cow herds in the province, in July, 2017, Party Chief Nguyen Van The and leaders of provincial People’s Committee liaised with TH True Milk Corporation on the project to raise more cattle and milk processing plant at large scale in the province.
The TH True Milk Corporation said it has planned to invest in milk cow farming and processing plants in Soc Trang Province.
Deputy manager of the project Tran Van Tam said close cooperation and alliance are needed in breeding milk cow to ensure milk must be sold or the project will fail.
Additionally, training courses must be provided to farmers to ensure product to meet enterprises’ requirements.
