A requiem for heroic martyrs marking the 64th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day (July 27) was held at the Duc Co district cemetery in the Central Highland province of Gia Lai on July 19.
The requiem aimed to honor those who had sacrificed their lives and contributed to the service of the nation during the past struggle for national independence and freedom.
The requiem coincided with a ceremony to install an eight-ton bell at the cemetery.
On this occasion, the Vietnam Bank for Industry and Trade (VietinBank) donated VND50 billion for upgrading the cemetery and provided VND215 million for building a community cultural centre in Ten hamlet in Ia Bnon commune of Duc Co district.
Martyrs’ cemetery is in the border district of Duc Co and is the resting place of fallen soldiers repatriated from Cambodia.
In related news, a website providing information on martyrs buried at the Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery was launched in central Quang Tri Province on the same day.
The website, http://nghiatrangtruongson.quangtri.gov.vn, was funded by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee at a cost of VND1.3 billion (US$61,000). The web service will help people to look and search for tombs of relatives and friends easily.
Truong Son National Martyrs Cemetery located in Gio Linh District is the largest one of its kind in the country with around 10,263 martyrs buried there.
Yesterday, the People’s Committee of Huong Tra District in Thua Thien-Hue Province discovered the remains of 12 soldiers who had died in Huong Chu Commune in 1968.
On the same day, the Ho Chi Minh City Association for Former Volunteer Youth handed over the ashes of 18 volunteers to neighboring cities and provinces at the Memorial Area of Volunteer Martyrs in Tay Ninh Province. The volunteers had been killed in the war against America in the southeast region and in Cambodia.
A concert titled “Lullaby for comrades” will be held at the Dong Loc historical site in Ha Tinh Province on July 24.
The music show aims to honor martyrs and war invalids, and give a chance to audience to meet veteran soldiers, musicians and singers.
The performance will be broadcast live on VTC.
