Project helps improve Mekong delta inhabitants’ livelihood in climate change

The conference, held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the World Bank in the Mekong delta City of Can Tho, had met to discuss the project to build climate resilience and ensure sustainable livelihoods for people living in nine Mekong Delta provinces.

Nine Mekong provinces including An Giang, Dong Thap, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Vinh Long, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Kien Giang will benefit from the project carried out by the Strengthening Water Management and Irrigations Systems Project under MARD and funded from the WB.

Total investment capital is US$384,979; of which WB’s preferential loan is US$310 million, corresponding capital is US$72.547 million and capital from private companies is US$2,432 million.

Nathan Belete, Practice Manager for the World Bank’s Agriculture Global Practice for the East Asia and the Pacific Region, said that the project aims to improve the country’s climate resilience  and ensure sustainable livelihood for inhabitants in nine provinces.

In the second phase of the project, it will help residents in An Giang, Kien Giang, and Dong Thap provinces in improving flooding drainage to adapt to climate change and managing of water in river upstream. 

In the third phase, the project investor will build infrastructure for earning in coastal regions, control water source and production transfer to adapt to climate change which will benefit people in Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Vinh Long, Soc Trang provinces and the next phase, it will construct infrastructure against erosion along coastal areas, supplying fresh ware for raising shrimp in salty forest and improve people’s livelihood.
