However, he added that much work still needed to be done to meet the developing needs of provincial residents.

The President was speaking during a working visit to the south-east coastal province yesterday.

He made visits to local enterprises and met fishermen at Cat Lo port in Vung Tau city.

Sang said the fishing industry was one of the main economic driving forces around Vung Tau city, helping to create jobs for thousands of fishermen and contributing to city development.

The fishing haul last year climbed to 181,000 tonnes, providing a profit of VND4.8 trillion (US$220 million).

Despite a fleet of thousands of fishing ships, Sang said Ba Ria-Vung Tau authorities needed to speed up procedures for loans to make further ship upgrades.

On a visit to Phu My 3 industrial zone, he praised Japanese investors for quickly implementing projects and called on investors to focus on agricultural mechanics and transport.

Phu My 3, being built through combined efforts of Japan and Viet Nam, specialises in mechanics and electronics. It covers 1,050 hectares.
