The Mekong River Committee was established in 1956 under the auspices of the United Nations to coordinate aid and manage resources in the river basin.
By 1995, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam co-signed the Mekong Cooperation Agreement and establish the Mekong River Commission (MRC) (instead of the Mekong River Commission).
The Mekong River Commission is currently implementing a five-year strategic plan for 2016-2020 with seven main results and over 190 activities, total cost of US$ 60 million.
The plan is to implement priorities of the river basin development strategy on base of management of water resources, to transfer key functions about the river basin management to the country and reform activities of the MRC Secretariat.
