Phu Quoc forest fire flares up again

A forest fire that broke out Monday in the Mekong Delta Province of Kien Giang’s Phu Quoc District began burning out of control again Wednesday after having previously been stamped out.

The inferno flared up again at around 9 am in Bai Vong Village of Ham Ninh Commune.

The district mobilized over 500 people to fight the blaze and the flames were brought under control in just over an hour.

When the fire first ignited on Monday, it took over five hours to put out the blaze, leaving more than 40 hectares of forest destroyed. There are no estimates yet as to how much damage the new fire has caused.

In related news, a 44-year-old man died March 9 of severe burns after attempting to stamp out a forest fire in Than Uyen District in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau.

Vu A Lai died after he and several other residents tried to fight the blaze, which broke out in Noong Quang Village, Khoen On District at around noon on March 8.
