MOIT advocates Red River waterway project

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) is supporting the controversial waterway project in the Red River because it will take advantage of water resource and rationalize power price, deputy head of the ministry’s General Directorate of Energy Do Duc Quan said yesterday.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment has recently proposed the Prime Minister to approve a mega traffic and hydropower project in the Red River, whose investor will be Xuan Thien Company Ltd under Xuan Thanh Economic Group.

According to the company’s proposal, the traffic route will extend 288 kilometers from the northern border line with China to the lower reaches of the Red River.

Answering the press on the project, Mr. Quan said that it concerned infrastructure field under responsibilities of the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Planning and Investment not hydropower.

The project is still being studied by related ministries and agencies, he added.
