This year, because flood level in provinces in the Mekong Delta was low, local farmers promoted production of autumn-winter rice crop.
The Department of Cultivation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that farmers in the Mekong Delta provinces have grown more than 600,000 hectares of autumn-winter rice crop out of a target of 800,000 hectares and are expected to finish by mid-September.
Currently, at some places where rice was planted early, farmers have started harvesting with average productivity of 6 tons of rice per hectare.
According to Huynh Huu Loc, a trader in Vinh Thoi Commune in Dong Thap Province’s Lai Vung District, fresh regular rice was bought at VND4,200-4,400 per kilogram and fresh long-grain rice at VND4,600-4,800 per kilogram. With such prices, farmers who produce early autumn-winter rice crop make a profit of about VND12 million per hectare.
The Vietnam Food Association said that the price of unpacked free alongside 5-percent-broken rice was around VND7,100-7,200 per kilogram, 15-percent-broken rice around VND6,850-6,950 per kilogram. Since the beginning of this year, rice exporters have exported about 3.6 million tons of rice, bringing in more than US$1.5 billion.
