The Southern Institute for Water Resources Planning have implemented three irrigation works in Can Tho, Ca Mau and Vinh Long cities, where have been severely flooded due to climate change in the Mekong Delta.
From now until 2016, the central government will finance an irrigation work to cope with flooding in Can Tho city. The project comprises many important items including 24 sewerage pits and two docks on Tra Noc River and Binh Thuy River.
In addition, it will dredge 109 kilometers of canals, fortify 133.5 kilometer embankments and build six new pumping stations.
In Vinh Long city, a total of 19 irrigation canals and many embankments will be built from now until 2020. The city will enlarge drainage system and build an extra of 74 kilometer dyke roads and eight pumping stations with a total capacity of 226,800 cubic meters per hour.
Ca Mau city will upgrade 119.7 kilometer dykes along Ca Mau River and local canals by 2020 and construct a rainwater drainage system.
