As two back-to-back storms hit the country recently, its Mekong Delta in the south is urgently fortifying dikes, holding swimming classes, and carrying out evacuations to prepare for the upcoming flooding season.

As two back-to-back storms hit the country recently, its Mekong Delta in the south is urgently fortifying dikes, holding swimming classes, and carrying out evacuations to prepare for the upcoming flooding season.

Dong Thap province invested over VND15 billion in cementing embankments in order to protect 37,000 hectares of rice.

It is organizing 440 free swimming classes for 12,350 children aged 7 – 15.

The province has also set up 479 rescue teams comprising 2,650 people, 183 of whom are assigned at vulnerable spots.

Neighboring An Giang province has established 114 semi-boarding places to look after 3,000 children during the flooding season.

The provincial People’s Committee has instructed districts to check and evacuate residents to safer places.
