MARD encourages expanding production

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development encouraged farmers and breeders to expand the paddy fields and breeding farms in accordance with procedures and safety regulations as it is convenient time for developing agriculture sector.

A conference, held by the Ministry and the Southwestern region Steering Committee in the southern province of Dong Thap, has had many solutions promoting production and consumption in the Mekong delta. The Mekong delta region has over 4.2 hectare of paddy field in 2014.

It is estimated the region will produce more than 25 million tons of grains in 2014, an increase of 510,000 tons compared to last year. It is hoped that around 16 million tons of unhusked rice or around eight million tons of rice will be exported this year.

By July 31, exporters signed contracts to export over 5.7 million tons of rice, witnessing a 10.3 percent increase compared against figures from the same period last year.

Export of shrimps and catfish saw an increase in first seven months of 2014. Total revenue from fishery export in first six months reached US$3.61 billion, an increase of 24. 7 percent compared to the same period last year.

The shrimp export is forecast to grow more. Production, consumption and export of fishery in the next time will be stable.

Addressing at the conference, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Cao Duc Phat stressed that from now on, the ministry will liaise with localities to push up production and consumption of agricultural produces in order to improve values and sustainable development; therefore, creating jobs and raise locals’ income.
