It was co-organized by Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in HCMC, the city’s Departments of Industry and Trade, Natural Resources and Environment, and the Saigon Union of Trading Cooperative.

At 8:30 p.m., lights were switched off along streets, restaurants, coffee shops and hotels in downtown Districts 1 and 3. Areas surrounding the Youth Cultural House became dark.

Stating at the event, director of SGGP Communication and Advertisement Center Nguyen Van Luong said that the Earth Hour campaign has been responded by Vietnam since 2009 and become the country’s largest environmental volunteer movement.

This year, the Green Earth Hour campaign has attracted thousands of people registering to attend in the light-off event on March 28. The number of attendees reached nearly 9,000 residents, and 21,000 activists and young people in HCMC.

Before the light-off event, over 300 activists rode bicycles around some streets with banners and slogans calling a green life and energy saving.

It was followed by an environmental knowledge competition among 100 candidates from 20 universities in the city at 4:30 p.m.

The organization board and activists have implemented other projects before and after the light-off event to raise the public’s awareness of environmental protection.

Besides HCMC, 61 other provinces and cities have also responded to the Earth Hour 2015 campaign.
