On the occasion of the Day of War Invalids and Martyrs (July 27), State President Nguyen Minh Triet yesterday visited and offered gifts to war invalids and wounded veterans being treated at Thuan Thanh War Invalids Convalescent Center in Bac Ninh province.

President Triet highly appreciated efforts by war invalids, wounded veterans and families of martyrs in overcoming difficulties in their life.

He said the Party, State and people always pays due attention to caring war invalids, wounded veterans and families of martyrs, who have made great devotion to the past struggles for national defense.

President Triet also praised authorities, agencies and organizations around the country for conducting activities of paying gratitude to war invalids, wounded veterans and families of martyrs.

On the same day, the HCM City authorities held an incense-offering ceremony at Ben Duoc Martyr’s Memorial in Cu Chi District.

Attending the ceremony were high-ranking officials from the central and local governments, heroic Vietnamese mothers, armed forces heroes, labor heroes, war invalids, wounded veterans and families of martyrs.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Deputy Chairperson of the HCM City’s People's Committee, highly appreciated great sacrifice made by veteran soldiers, war invalids and their families to the nation’s liberty and independence. She urged agencies and organizations to fully implement all incentive policies intended for former soldiers, war invalids and families of martyrs.

Yesterday also saw a tribute ceremony paid to late Catholic priest Nguyen Ba Luat, who was among the activists fighting against the French colonialists. The ceremony was held at the Priest's Cemetery, of the HCM City Diocese, by the municipal Catholic Solidarity Committee and the Tan Binh District’s Fatherland Front Committee.

Due to his participation in struggles for national liberation, priest Luat was sentenced to 10 years in jail by a court of the French colonialists. In 1951, during his mission to Cao Lanh, he was killed in an ambush by the enemy.

In Lam Dong province, 12 delegations of the provincial Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs yesterday paid visits and offered gifts to war invalids, wounded soldiers and families of martyrs. Gifts valued at VND500,000 each were handed to 110 beneficiaries in the province.
