Floodwater level forecast to rise higher in Mekong delta

The National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center July 14 said that due to tropical low pressure plus Southwest monsoon, the South of Vietnam has experience heavy rains in these days. It is predicted that the region will continue having precipitations and even whirlwind.
River waters in the Mekong delta is rising quickly. At present, the Tien River at Tan Chau station in An Giang province was measured at 1.88 meter while in Hau River at Chau Doc station was 1.82 meter.
In a few next days, floodwaters in Cuu Long River will continue rising and then slowly. Highest water level will be 2.1 meter in Tan Chau and 1.95 meter in Chau Doc on July 18 as per meteorologists.
Weather forecasters said that flood season in Mekong delta will come early this year; plus, floodwaters in Tien and Hau rivers and low-lying regions will be higher than last year. Highest floodwater will be in early October fluctuating between the alarm level II and above.
Because the flood development is quite complicated, competent agencies in the region are adopting preventative measures to protect production and people’s safety.
Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development In Dong Thap Province Nguyen Van Cong said that as per plan, farmers are preparing for fall-winter crop with productivity of 728,000 tons; however, it falls in flood season, the agriculture department warned farmers to sow the crop in areas with protection dykes for their crop safety.
Agriculture sector in Long An Province followed suit. It along with local administrations increased information of flood situation urging caution for locals.
Worse, along with flood, land slide is developing everywhere in the Mekong delta provinces of Dong Thap, An Giang, Hau Giang, Ben Tre, and Can Tho threatening inhabitants’ lives.
Governments in localities was quick to evacuate people in land slide-prone areas to safer shelters as well as post warning sign in the area. Rescue team will work relentlessly to help people when the disaster happens.
