The Mekong river level in the source is rising; Tien river water in Tan Chau Town in the Mekong delta province of An Giang was measured 2.67 meter while it was 2.33 meter in Hau River in Chau Doc District.
In next time, because flood water in the upper combining with tiding, river water level will rise quickly. Highest Tien river water in Tan Chau will be 3 meter on July 27 while it is forecast to reach 2.6 meter in Hau River.
This year, Mekong floods likely arrive earlier than before.
In Long An province, heavy rains plus with flood in the upper caused rising water level in fields in Dong Thap Muoi District of Long An province. In past week, raised river water with average of 5-10 centimeter per night destroyed thousands of paddy fields.
Party Secretary of Ca Say Village Le Thi Thanh Thuy said, of 95 hectare in the Lang Sen Wetland Reserve, nearly 10 hectare of paddy field totally lost while farmers have just harvested half in the remaining field.
As per Tan Hung District People’s Committee, farmers in the district planted 38,000 hectare of the summer-fall crop and they have harvested just over 27,000 hectare. It is estimated that farmers suffered huge losses of over VND12 billion ($527,942).
Vinh Hung District is at the brink of losing 8,000 hectare of the summer-fall crop if the river water continues rising. Local administrators mobilized residents to reinforce embankments to minimize loss.
The Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention, Search, and Rescue urged the departments of agriculture and rural development, the local steering board on natural disaster prevention, search and rescue and media to keep track on the development of floods and publicize the flood situation to local people timely.
