E-Government to Increase, Tech Leaders Say

The World Bank rated Viet Nam’s Knowledge Index and Knowledge Economy Index at 3.17 and 3.27 respectively, ranking 96 out of 140 countries, said Dr. Le Truong Tung, deputy chairman of the Viet Nam Association for Information Processing, at the Viet Nam Information and Communication Technology Outlook 2008 on Tuesday in District 1.

The best measure of the increase in e-government is the country’s adoption of 16 steps created by the United Nations Public Administration Network.

“This is an achievement of the country,” he added. “The government has properly acknowledged the critical role of e-government in the development of the economy and society and has chosen the right way to go further.”

The government has chosen following three key factors: the number of Web sites created by the government, telecommunications infrastructure, and training education. The effect of these factors can be seen in the number of existing Web sites of the government, the indexes of telecommunications infrastructure and human capital. 

In Southeast Asia, Viet Nam is ranked sixth after Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Brunei.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong, deputy chairwomen of the city’s People’s Committee, took part in the inauguration ceremony of an exhibition featuring information technology products and solutions at the Investment and Trade Promotion Center, 92 Nguyen Hue District 1. The display is one of the activities marking the Viet Nam ICT Outlook 2008.
