Dong Loc played a significant role during the Vietnamese-American War. It was a strategic location by which the supplies were transported. From 1965 to 1968, American airplanes dropped about 50,000 bombs and thousands of rockets on the crossroad to block the supply route. About 16,000 militia members and soldiers were involved in the effort to protect the route and repair damage. Four hundred sixty five were killed, among them 10 militia girls.

A contest was held for “Songs about the ten immortal flowers” with prizes awarded. The song “The Love of Mothers” by  song writer Phan Huynh Dieu received first prize.
