The national campaign themed “Clean up the world” has been kicked off in the northern province of Thai Nguyen on September 24 by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
This year’s event with the message “Take action for a waste-free environment” aims to increase the public’s awareness of environmental protection, pollution and waste, in a bid to contribute to global environmental efforts.
The People’s Committee of Thai Nguyen Province awarded 30 prizes and certificates of merits to organizations and individuals for their outstanding contribution and works in environmental protection.
Local residents have participated in activities designed for the campaign such as planting trees, waste recycling and green consumption after the launching ceremony.
‘Clean up the World’ started as a community activity in 1993 after ‘Clean Up Australia’ founders, Ian Kiernan and Kim McKay, approached the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with the idea of taking the Clean Up Australia concept globally. The resulting partnership now mobilizes an estimated 35 million volunteers from 120 countries annually, making it one of the largest community-based environmental campaigns in the world.(source: internet)
Vietnam has participated the campaign since 1994. The country each year also suffers losses of some US$780 million due to illnesses caused to the community by environment pollution.
