224 years ago, national hero Nguyen Hue launched a speedy military offensive northwards and defeated more than two hundred thousand Chinese Qing troops in the spring of 1789.

Nguyen Hue, who was later proclaimed Emperor Quang Trung, led his brilliant forces from Hue Imperial Palace to attack Hanoi.

At that time Hanoi was under the occupation of the Chinese Qing army.

His surprise attack on the fifth day of Lunar New Year smashed and wiped out the army of Qing aggressors out of Vietnam.

In the central city of Hue in Thua Thien-Hue Province, the People's Committee held a solemn incense burning ceremony to mark the 225th anniversary of Nguyen Hue receiving the Imperial Throne on Ban Mountain in An Tay Ward in Hue City.

On the Ban Mountain, Thua Thien-Hue province leaders have built a   memorial on a 9.5ha area to worship national hero Quang Trung.

The Quang Trung statue was assembled from eight blocks of red marble stone with 18 arrays, each weighing 10-60 tons.

Residents in central Binh Dinh Province, King Quang Trung’s homeland, gathered at Quang Trung Museum a day earlier and offered incense to commemorate the late hero.

Meanwhile during the fifth day of the first lunar month, similar commemorations in honor of the Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da Victory were also held in the central provinces of Nghe An.

In Hanoi, thousands of locals and visitors attended a festival in Hanoi’s Dong Da Park marking the 224th anniversary of the Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da Victory on February 14.

The festival opened with offerings and incense in memory of King Quang Trung-Nguyen Hue and the Tay Son troops.

The festival at Quang Trung Museum reenacts Nguyen Hue’s attack on the enemy in defense of the national sovereignty.
