Flash floods inundated hundreds of thousands of households with several areas completely isolated. This is said to be the most severe flooding since the beginning of the year in mid central region, especially in Quang Nam Province.

According to the Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention in the central and the central highland regions, 500,000 households are still submerged under floodwaters with several under three meters of water.

Flood levels exceeded level 3 in Vu Gia and Thu Bon Rivers in Quang Nam Province. About 200,000 households have been submerged in Dien Ban, Duy Xuyen, Dai Loc Districts and Hoi An town.

The steering committee said that rapidly rising floodwaters together with heavy rains and strong winds have caused many problems in evacuation work.

Floodwaters also caused landslides and inundated several roads causing severe traffic jams.

Several roads in Hue City are inundated under 0.2-0.6m water. Residents rushed to buy up necessary commodities to stockpile and prices of pork, eggs, chicken and vegetables have already skyrocketed.

The Department of Industry and Trade in Thua Thien-Hue Province said they have stockpiled 100 tons of rice and 100 tons of instant noodles for residents in flooded areas.

Traffic also came to a standstill along eight roads which now lie under 0.3-1.5m of floodwater in Dong Xuan, Son Hoa and Dong Hoa Districts and Tuy Hoa City in Phu Yen Province.

Persistent heavy rains also flooded most roads in the center of Da Nang City. Traffic on Ton Duc Thang Street and Highway 1A is now completely cut off.

Cach Mang Thang Tam Street in Cam Le District is badly flooded since Monday night, disrupting traffic from Da Nang City to the Central Highlands. At 10:30 last night, a bus carrying 40 passengers broke down midst the fast flowing floodwaters which swept away some luggage of the passengers. Rescue forces managed to pull the bus out this morning.

Several cars were stranded at several sections along Highway 1A in Dien Ban, Duy Xuyen and Thang Binh Districts in Quang Nam Province.

Rainfall abated by Tuesday morning and floodwaters are now slowly receding.
