A temporary bridge in Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho Province collapsed January 14 when a mobile crane traveled over it, seriously injuring two people.
The Cai Son temporary bridge had a load capacity of five tons while the crane weighed 15 tons. Six motorcycles plunged into the river when the bridge collapsed and two women were hurt.
This was the second such mishap in the last six months.
The 10-year-old Cai Son, an old iron bridge, has been brought down to build a new bridge.
But since the temporary bridge was built, traffic on Highway 923 is constantly jammed because it is small while the number of vehicles is very high.
