Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) yesterday started construction of Phuoc Khanh cable stayed bridge, which will connect Can Gio district in Ho Chi Minh City up to Nhon Trach district in the neighboring province of Dong Nai.
The ground breaking ceremony was held in Can Gio with the attention of the Deputy Minister of Transport and the Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam.
The work belongs to bid package J3 under Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway project.
The 3.18 kilometer Phuoc Khanh Bridge will span Long Tau River and permit large vessels of 50,000 DWT to travel across with the distance from the bridge to the water face of 135 meters.
The J3 bid package was implemented by Japanese company Sumitomo Mitsui Construction and Vietnamese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation at a total capital of VND3 trillion (US$138 million), financed by the Japanese International Corporation Agency and reciprocal capital.
Once being built, the Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway will connect traffic infrastructure in the Mekong Delta and the Southeastern region with local highways, deep seaports such as Cai Mep-Thi Vai and Sao Mai-Ben Dinh, and the planned Long Thanh International Airport.
It will ease traffic pressure in the areas and shorten cargo transport time from the Mekong Delta province of Long An to the southeastern provinces of Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
