Blood donation festival expects to collect 5,000 units

Vice State President Nguyen Thi Doan beat the drum to kick off the annual blood donation programme, or the fourth Red Spring Festival 2011, at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on Feb. 20.

Some 5,000 units of blood were expected to be collected during the day, helping ease the shortage of blood in medical treatment after the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

In the morning of Feb. 20, 8,000 people, including Health Minister Nguyen Quoc Trieu, registered to donate blood.

According to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the festival, themed “Share red blood, give hope”, attracted the participation of 20,000 people.

On the occasion, Vice State President Doan presented insignias to the event’s three organisers, including the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the Hanoi Steering Committee on Voluntary Blood Donations and the Hanoi Youth Volunteers for Blood Donation.
