Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a new traffic development plan for the Mekong Delta till the year 2020, which includes construction of new bridges to replace all bamboo bridges by 2015.
Provinces in the Mekong Delta have done away with 4,000 bamboo bridges and built 11,000 new bridges in recent years, after the Government called on the private sector and residents to join hands to build bridges in rural areas.
Ben Tre, An Giang and Ca Mau Provinces are leading in construction of new bridges. People in Ben Tre Province have donated generously towards building 2,600 bridges since 2000.
Since 2006, local authorities and residents in An Giang Province have constructed 500 new bridges.
Ca Mau Province has built 1,588 bridges with a total capital of VND350 billion (US$17 million).
