Ho Chi Minh City Police Department of Criminal Investigation on Social Order (coded PC45) September 4 busted an illegal marriage broker ring at the road No.18, Binh Tan District and arrested two Taiwanese (China) and two Vietnamese people.
The two Vietnamese peple including one Vietnamese woman Phung Quang Ngoc, 29, at Phu Thanh Ward, Tan Phu District and her brother Phung Quang Quang.
They were arrested while were running an illegal marriage brokerage for Taiwanese men looking for Vietnamese brides. Police also found 13 young women in a house.
Since 2004, broker Quang, 31, organized 100 illegal marriage brokerage cases, which help foreign men look for Vietnamese women.
He earned from VND5-10 million (US$250 – 500) per month from organizing illegal marriage brokerage cases.
Earlier, police arrested three Korean while they were seeing 17 Vietnamese girls in Binh Chanh District.
In recent years, the number of illegal marriage brokers has increased, drawing mostly on young women from Vietnam’s poor southern Mekong Delta.
Vietnam plans to set up an overseas marriage brokerage to regulate the sector, which is now run by illegal matchmakers accused of humiliating women and fuelling abuse.
According to the General Statistical Office, nearly 32,000 Vietnamese women married foreign men, mainly Taiwanese and Koreans, from 2007 to 2009.
Dr. Le Thi Quy, director of the Centre for Gender Research and Development, who has studied marriages between Vietnamese women and foreigners. Many marriages are tragic. Some are tricked into marriage with disabled or mentally ill people. Some have become victims of domestic violence,” Quy said.
